Man Arrested For Terrorist Threats At UC Santa Cruz

A 25-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly made terrorist threats against the University of California at Santa Cruz campus through social media posts found Thursday, police said.

Ayman Kareem Hawari was arrested on suspicion of making terrorist threats and resisting arrest, campus police Chief Nader Oweis said.

Around 7 p.m. Thursday, police received as report from a parent who saw an anonymous post on social media that referred to making explosives, homicide, suicide and a past university shooting, Oweis said.

Officers were able to locate Hawari and found evidence that he authored the post, according to Oweis. The post did not target anyone, but threatened the school’s Oakes and Porter colleges, the chief said.

Police have not identified a connection between Hawari and the campus, according to Oweis.

Hawari was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail early this morning, Oweis said.

Anyone with information on the suspect that can be used in the police investigation is asked to contact campus police.
