Dirty 30 Ice Cream, Limited Release Created Exclusively for New Leaf’s 30th Birthday, Available Now
Every birthday calls for ice cream and cake, and to celebrate New Leaf’s 30th anniversary this month, New Leaf wanted to offer its customers something special and unique. New Leaf staffers brainstormed with local artisan ice cream innovator Dave Kumec, the owner of Mission Hill Creamery. “We wanted to create an ice cream that would knock everybody’s sox off and exemplify the finest of local ingredients, and I think we have accomplished that,” said Kumec.

Named Dirty 30, the ice cream bring local cake and cookies together. It has Mission Hill Creamery’s organic vanilla made with Straus Family Creamery dairy as the base, infused with a generous caramel swirl made with organic ingredients. It’s blended with generous portions of deluxe rich chocolate cake donated by Black China Bakery, a family-owned wholesale bakery in Santa Cruz, and chocolate Newman-Os, chocolate cream-filled cookies made with organic flour and organic sugar, by Newman’s Own based in Aptos. “The softness of the chocolate cake, which was Black China Bakery’s first product 32 years ago, and the crunchy cookies make for a great combination,” said Katelin Brightman, who owns the bakery with her mother Patricia Bowers.
Only 1,000 pints of Dirty 30 were produced and are now for sale exclusively at all New Leaf stores for $5.99 each. “Since New Leaf opened 30 years ago, we’ve stayed true to our roots of nourishing our community and supporting local organizations. This culinary collaboration which is literally made two floors down from our office is a great way to celebrate our anniversary and highlight some of the amazing food companies in Santa Cruz County,” said Sarah Owens, New Leaf marketing director. “We may run out of Dirty 30 by our 30th anniversary block party on Saturday, October 24, so don’t wait to try it!” she added. The celebration will feature live music, arts and crafts for kids, local food, beer and wine tasting, do-it-yourself wellness education booths, and a raffle. All proceeds from the block party will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank. Everyone who donates a can of food for the food bank will receive a free raffle ticket. The block party will take place from 4 pm – 8 pm at the Westside New Leaf, 1001 Fair Ave, Santa Cruz. For more information about the event, visit www.newleaf.com.
