Girls With Goals Make it Happen!
This weekend, local soccer team,SCC Breakers 98g, played in the 2013 Breakers Cup and not only came in first place, they made a clean sweep of beating all 4 teams. Of note was the the amazing defense demonstrated from the impenetrable back line and goalie during all 4 games, two games being shut outs! (Goalie: Sadie Collins, Right Back: Lauren Winkler #21, Center Right Back: Genevieve Plageman #16, Center Left Back: Mikayla Reed #25, Left Backs: Lauren Inman #4 and Alyssa Miller #7).
First game on Saturday vs Tracy Knocks was won handily with the defense shutting down the opponent's offense completely, resultng in a shut out, final score 5-0. Alyssa Miller #7, who spent last season as an outside back was placed as a left mid in this first game. Miller scored the first game of the tournament. (Alyssa Miller #7 - 1 goal, Geneva Travers #8 - 1 goal, Paloma Hernandez-Torres #20 - 1 goal, Veronica Roth-Madrid #13 - 1 goal, and MacKenzie Wessell #3 - 1 goal).
Second game on Saturday, Breakers played a tough, very physical match against Central Valley, ending in a score of 2 - 1. Breakers scored first and lead in goal count for the entire game.(Goals scored by Geneva Travers, Carson Cash)
Sunday's morning game was against De Anza Sparx. This was the first game the Breakers didn't score first. Minutes before the end of the first half the defense had a temporary lapse in focus; the goalie, Sadie Collins made an excellent save but the ball bounced off her body and the defense couldn't clear the ball out of their own third in time. De Anza exploited the opportunity to the fullest by scoring a goal to end the first half with a lead of 0-1.
Minutes into the 2nd half, the Breakers charged forward causing a corner kick. The corner kick was taken by Carson Cash who succinctly dropped the ball into the perfect spot for Keeley Christiansen to head the ball into the back of the net to tie the game. Soon after, a goal was scored by Geneva Travers, followed by another goal by Paloma Hernandez-Torres. Game ended 3 -1, sending the Breakers to the play offs.
The play off game was between SCC Breakers vs Vacaville United. The game started off at a fast pace and within the first few minutes Geneva Travers was passed a threw ball by Carson Cash and in a 1 v 1 wth the goalie she scored the first goal for the Breakers. Travers was then part of the next play when she ran down another threw ball served up by Mackenzie Wessell #3, but this time Travers being double teamed, passed the ball across the mouth of the goal to Paloma Hernandez-Torres who easily found the back of the net. The final Breaker's score was an 'own goal' scored by Vacaville off a cross sent in front of the goal by Keeley Christiansen. The game wasn't all celebratory of course, the opposing team put up a great battle but unfortunately emotions got the best of them, or at least their coach. Three quarters through the game the coach was put out of his misery by the referee who issued him a red card after warnings regarding his dissent were ignored.
Special thanks goes out to Coach Mick Rivas who covered for the team's normal coach, Coach Amy Rivas. Coach Amy was disappointed she couldn't make the tournament but was told the news of the win via speaker phone with Coach Mike and the team after Champion Cup and medals were delivered.
The Breakers came off a tough Spring Season with a record of 0-7-1, but with the success experienced in this tournament, the girls are looking forward to a strong showing in this Fall season.
Upcoming for the SCC Breakers 98 is the Stanford Classic Tournament August 17th/18th and then the Fall League season begins. First home game is September 7th.
