Two Area Mobile Home Parks To Receive Free Smoke Alarms

The project is a collaboration of the American Red Cross and the Central Fire Protection District.

American Red Cross volunteers and firefighters from Central Fire Protection District will canvass two mobile home parks in the Live Oak Neighborhood of Santa Cruz on Saturday, July 25 to install free smoke alarms in homes that need them and help residents to create escape plans about what to do in case a fire breaks out in their home.

Canvassing begins at 9 a.m. in Snug Harbor Blue in Santa Cruz and Gold Star Mobile Homes in Santa Cruz, according to a Red Cross spokesperson.

The Live Oak neighborhood was identified by the Red Cross as a community at risk of preventable fire deaths, and the Red Cross aims to reduce deaths and injuries from home fires by 25 percent over the next five years nationwide, the organization said.

“Installing smoke alarms cuts the risk of someone dying from a home fire in half, so we’re joining with community partners to install smoke alarms,” said Michele Averill, CEO of the American Red Cross of the Central Coast. “We will also teach people how to be safe from home fire and how to escape their home in two minutes.”
