Young Beach Victim Identified

Lara Rekhi, 6, was tragically pinned by a log at a Live Oak beach Thursday morning.

The has been identified as Lara Rekhi of San Jose, according to the Coroner's Office.

Rekhi was playing in the surf at about 11:45 a.m. when a log washed in and pinned her. When emergency personnel arrived, she was unconscious. According to Central Fire, they took her to Dominican Hospital where she regained a normal pulse and vital signs. 

She was then flown to Stanford Hospital where she was pronounced dead later that afternoon.

Sheriff's deputy April Skalland said Rekhi was visiting Santa Cruz with her family. They were staying in a vacation rental in the neighborhood of the beach. 

Central Fire spokesman along with other debris after the week's storms. Skalland estimated that the log was 12 feet long and weighed about 1,000 pounds.
