On May 10, 2014, the long awaited water park in San Diego’s Embarcadero marina area opened after being close to a century in the making!
The park was originally included in the plans for the County Administration Building constructed in the 1930s but was never built. In September 2012, San Diego County recommitted to the 50 million dollar project with the goal of turning the parking space back to a people’s space.
The park boasts an 830-foot long fountain that runs nearly the length of the space and has 31 jets that shoot water 14 feet into the air and into a shallow splash area for kids. This new public gathering space also includes large grass areas, gardens, shaded sitting areas and a top notch playground, all amid the backdrop of a breath taking water front area.
This new bay-front space is part of a larger project that extends along the marina to Seaport Village. This longtime San Diego tourist attraction, that features an eclectic mix of Victorian and Spanish-style shops and restaurants, recently received a makeover with the addition of “The Headquarters”. Now a premier shopping, dining and entertainment destination, the area started with the renovation of the Old Police Headquarters building and two other structures.
It is important to note that all of these new elements mean nothing but good things for property values of the luxury condos in the vicinity and continue to distinguish San Diego as one the best cities in the nation in which to live and raise a family.
Located at 1600 Pacific Highway and Harbor Drive, between Grape and Ash streets, the park is open 10am – 6pm daily.
