Woman from Southern California found dead in Big Sur wilderness, deputies say (cbsnews.com) — A 37-year-old Carlsbad woman, Joanna Ruth Shields, has been identified as the hiker found dead last week near Sykes Hot Springs in the Big Sur wilderness, and Monterey County authorities are treating the case as a suspicious death. Investigators are awaiting toxicology results and asking anyone with information to contact their detective as they work to determine what happened.
2. Events: Things to do include street fair, cultural bazaar, concerts, festivals, art shows and more (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Carlsbad residents can stroll the Flower Fields through May 10 and enjoy acres of blooming ranunculus plus family-friendly attractions on Paseo Del Norte. The roundup also highlights dozens of nearby North County events, from Encinitas concerts and walking tours to La Jolla festivals and a North Coast Rep gala that kicks off at Park Hyatt Aviara in Carlsbad.
3. 13-year-old Carlsbad teen dominates American Muay Thai and heads to the world championships in Greece (10news.com) — A 13-year-old Carlsbad resident, Valley Middle School student Maddie Kaufman, has become one of North America’s top young Muay Thai fighters and will represent the U.S. at the world championships in Greece this November. She trains six days a week at a Vista gym, helps younger kids there, and is already competing — and winning — against older, heavier opponents.
4. Oceanside approves 45% increase for city council member salaries (thecoastnews.com) — Oceanside’s City Council has approved a 45% salary increase for the mayor and council members, aiming to keep up with inflation and attract more candidates. In debating the change, city leaders compared Oceanside’s pay to nearby cities including Carlsbad, noting Oceanside had been near the bottom and will now sit closer to the regional middle.
