CARLSBAD, CA — A DUI checkpoint is scheduled Friday night in Carlsbad.
The checkpoint will be conducted from 6 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location in the city, according to the Carlsbad Police Department. Officers will be looking for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, according to the department. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.
"Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," Sgt. Conrad Page-DeMorst said. "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety."
Drivers convicted of a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
