CARLSBAD — A 21-year-old Oceanside man has been charged in connection with a March stabbing in Carlsbad that left a man with life-threatening injuries, police said.
Officers responded at 1:48 a.m. March 1 to a report of a fight involving several people in the 300 block of Grand Avenue near the train tracks. The altercation escalated, and a man was stabbed in the torso, according to the Carlsbad Police Department.
The victim was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. He was later reported in stable condition.
Witnesses described the suspect as a Hispanic man who fled before officers arrived. Investigators initially had only a description of the suspect, his clothing and his direction of travel.
After a months-long investigation, detectives identified the suspect as Angel Renteria, 21, of Oceanside. Police said Renteria was already in custody on an unrelated case when detectives on June 9 added charges related to the stabbing.
Renteria faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon, mayhem and participating in a criminal street gang.
