CARLSBAD, CA — The city of Carlsbad has named Rosemary Eshelman and Karen Pearson its 2026 Citizens of the Year, recognizing decades of volunteer service and leadership that have benefited local youth, nonprofits and the community.
The annual Citizen of the Year program, now more than 50 years old, recognizes community members who have made significant contributions to the civic improvement, beautification and betterment of the city.
Eshelman was recognized for more than four decades of service focused on youth programs, education and community collaboration. After working in the city's Parks & Recreation Department, she spent 25 years as coordinator of Youth Enrichment Services, a collaborative that connects schools, nonprofits, public safety agencies and community organizations to support young people. She later served as Carlsbad Unified School District's health and wellness coordinator, leading programs focused on student wellness, substance abuse prevention and parent education.
"Carlsbad is, and always has been, a special place for me," Eshelman said. "I have met so many people who connect and care about our community. I consider Carlsbad a quilt, and each of us contributes a square to complete it. I am so proud to be able to live here and to work with amazing organizations that are committed to making a difference in young people's lives."
Pearson was honored for her work connecting businesses, nonprofits and educational organizations. She has held leadership roles with the Mitchell Thorp Foundation and the San Diego North Economic Development Council and currently serves as incoming president of the MiraCosta College Foundation Board. She has also volunteered with organizations including TrueCare, the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation and Love on a Leash.
"There are so many ways to give back here in Carlsbad," Pearson said "Doing even the smallest thing helps you feel like you're part of the greater good."
The honorees were recognized during a ceremony Tuesday at Carlsbad City Hall.
