1. 11 Carlsbad Students Named National Merit Semifinalists (patch.com) β Carlsbad families have plenty to celebrate as 11 local high school seniors from Carlsbad High, La Costa Canyon, Pacific Ridge and Sage Creek are named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. They join 190 students countywide and more than 16,000 nationwide competing for prestigious scholarships, with finalists to be announced in February and winners revealed next spring and summer.

2. Escondido approves e-bike rules, ban for riders under 12 (thecoastnews.com) β Escondido has approved new e-bike rules, including a ban on riders under 12 for most electric bike classes, and joined a countywide Youth Safety Pilot Program. Carlsbad is already part of this same pilot, which tests whether age limits reduce youth injuries, so the data and enforcement approach could eventually shape consistent e-bike rules across North County communities.

3. Southern California rent bargains becoming harder to find (sandiegouniontribune.com) β Carlsbad renters are seeing modest rent increases, with one-bedroom prices up about 1.7% over the past year even as some nearby cities see declines. A new regional analysis shows Southern California rent cuts are getting rarer, especially in higher-income areas, making it tougher for local tenants to find real bargains compared with earlier this year.

4. Aptera Solar EV Testing Clears 40-Mile Daily Range Benchmark (environmentenergyleader.com) β Aptera recently tested its solar-powered electric vehicle at its final assembly facility in Carlsbad, where independent engineers measured more than 4 kilowatt-hours of usable solar energy collected in a single sunny summer day. That output could translate into roughly 40 to 47 miles of driving if the company meets its efficiency goals, though the results are from one prototype and not yet guaranteed for future production vehicles.
