CARLSBAD, CA — Construction has resumed on a project to replace aging beach stairs and widen the sidewalk along Carlsbad Boulevard after a planned summer pause.
The work is taking place between Pine and Tamarack avenues, where crews are replacing upper beach stairs and installing new concrete components to support upgraded stairways and widened sidewalk.
Crews will first finish installing new stairs and railings at Cherry and Hemlock avenues before beginning work to replace stairs at Maple and Sycamore avenues, according to the city.
During construction, Carlsbad Boulevard will be reduced to one lane in each direction in the work area, and portions of the upper sidewalk will be closed.
At least two beach stairways between Tamarack and Pine avenues will remain open throughout the project, according to the city. The grass area south of Hemlock Avenue will also remain open to the public.
The city said decades of exposure to coastal conditions caused concrete to deteriorate in some areas, exposing reinforcing steel and leading to corrosion and soil erosion around portions of the foundation.
The project remains on schedule for completion by summer 2027.
