1. 'Pretty epic' Kelvin wave is latest threat to SoCal coastal cities. How soon, and how bad? (latimes.com subscription) — Carlsbad has declared a local emergency to protect Carlsbad Boulevard from severe coastal erosion, and another powerful Kelvin wave is expected to raise local sea levels by about six inches in early October. Scientists warn that, combined with storms and high tides, this could worsen flooding and beach loss already seen from Carlsbad to Long Beach, putting homes, roads, and rail lines at greater risk.

2. Shadow Mountain church moves to Carlsbad to make way for housing (thecoastnews.com) — Shadow Mountain Community Church's longtime Encinitas congregation has officially moved its Sunday services to Carlsbad's Pine Avenue Community Center, creating a new North County Campus that meets weekly at 10 a.m. The small, close-knit congregation is bringing favorite traditions like a chili cookoff, coffee, and doughnuts to the new location as they settle into their Carlsbad home and continue worship together.

3. Things to do include a variety of local and regional events (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Carlsbad residents have several nearby outings to choose from, including a docent-led "Eat or be Eaten" nature walk at Batiquitos Lagoon and a Haunted Corn Maze at Carlsbad Strawberry Company this October. You'll also find regional festivals, concerts, workshops, and family events across Encinitas, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Escondido, La Jolla, and more, many requiring advance tickets or registration.

4. Oceanside spent tens of millions on homelessness. Here's what they used it for. (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Carlsbad is partnering with Oceanside on an $11.3 million state grant aimed at clearing and managing homelessness along a key stretch of State Route 78 through June 2027. Oceanside detailed how its broader housing‑first strategy, shelters, and safe parking programs are funded and performing, offering insight into regional approaches that can influence services and encampment enforcement affecting Carlsbad residents.
