2. Man Pleads Not Guilty To Murder In Carlsbad Pedestrian's Death (patch.com) — A woman was fatally struck while crossing Carlsbad Boulevard at Redwood Avenue, and a 26-year-old Escondido man has pleaded not guilty to murder and related DUI charges in her death. Carlsbad police used license plate readers, evidence at the scene and community tips to locate the vehicle, and the suspect is being held without bail.
3. California declares statewide emergency ahead of epic El Niño storms (napavalleyregister.com) — Carlsbad has declared a local emergency to protect Carlsbad Boulevard from severe coastal erosion as California braces for powerful El Niño storms. Alongside a new statewide emergency declaration, officials warn that recent damage from high surf and a coastally trapped Kelvin wave may be only the beginning of a rough winter for Carlsbad's shoreline.
4. High school football rankings: Carlsbad remains No. 1 in our weekly football poll (sacbee.com) — Carlsbad High's football team is still ranked No. 1 in the San Diego Union-Tribune poll, holding the top spot with a 5-0 record and most first-place votes. Nearby programs like Mission Hills, La Costa Canyon, San Marcos and Torrey Pines also place highly, underscoring how competitive North County football has become this season.
5. Who's News: 9/25/26 (thecoastnews.com) — Carlsbad residents are in the spotlight, with Cristiane Gilligan earning a culinary arts degree from SUNY Delhi and Mariana Andrade making Southern New Hampshire University's president's list. The city has also proclaimed Oct. 28 as John Maffucci Day, while a local biotech company, SMSbiotech, advances an FDA-cleared trial for an inhaled COPD therapy.
