CARLSBAD, CA — A Carlsbad skincare company has become the first beauty brand to receive Regenerative Organic Certification, a designation that goes beyond traditional organic standards to consider soil health, animal welfare and worker protections.
Evanhealy, a plant-based skincare company founded more than 27 years ago, received the certification from the Regenerative Organic Alliance, the company recently announced.
For evanhealy, the designation reflects an approach the company said has guided its products and relationships with growers for decades.
"Being recognized as the world's first Regenerative Organic Certified beauty brand was incredibly meaningful to us because it validates something we have believed from the beginning: The health of our skin is inseparable from the health of the land," Jamie Burkhalter, evanhealy's brand and retail experience manager, told Patch.
Regenerative Organic Certification builds on organic certification and is based on three pillars: soil health, animal welfare and social fairness.
"Traditional Organic Certification is the starting point for ROC certification," Burkhalter said. "Regenerative Organic Certification takes that commitment further."
Rather than focusing only on practices prohibited in organic agriculture, the certification also considers farming practices intended to restore and improve the land, she said.
Evanhealy works with farmers, women's cooperatives, artisan distillers and other plant growers and producers around the world. Ingredients including herbs, plant waters and oils are harvested, distilled and pressed before being sent to the company's Carlsbad facility, where its skincare products are developed and prepared, according to the company.
"Our products will always start with the land and its soil," Burkhalter said.
She said the company's direct relationships with farmers and other growers give evanhealy a better understanding of where its ingredients originate and how they are produced.
"That relationship is at the heart of evanhealy," Burkhalter said. "We believe that truly beautiful skincare begins with healthy soil, ancestral farming, and respect for the people and places that grow our ingredients."
Co-founder David Gordon said the certification was a "natural evolution" of the company's philosophy.
"We believe that your skincare is only as vital as the land and the people it comes from and when soil is alive and thriving, plants become stronger, more resilient, and more nutrient-rich," he said.
The certification comes as evanhealy expands its presence in Carlsbad. The company recently opened The Garden, its first flagship skincare boutique, inside the same facility that houses its lab, product development, manufacturing and shipping operations.
Evanhealy products are sold in more than 2,000 stores across the United States and Canada, including Whole Foods, Erewhon, Jimbo's, Amazon, evanhealy.com, according to the company.
