📰 News we're reading

1. What can we expect from El Niño? Scientists say brace for the worst. (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Carlsbad residents are being warned to prepare for severe El Niño impacts, including repeated king-tide flooding, worsening erosion at Carlsbad State Beach, and potential closures along Carlsbad Boulevard near Encinas Creek. Local officials have already declared an emergency and closed the Tamarack parking lot, while scientists say higher sea levels and powerful storms could further threaten roads, beaches, and nearby infrastructure this winter.

2. I-5 near Camp Pendleton shut down for 2nd day as blazes scorch 2,000+ acres (nbcsandiego.com) — Wildfires near Camp Pendleton have twice shut down stretches of I-5 and prompted a smoke advisory that specifically includes Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Vista. Carlsbad residents are urged to be aware of changing freeway closures, smoky conditions, and heightened fire danger as strong winds and heat persist through the weekend.

3. Santa Ana winds, hot temperatures continue through weekend (fox5sandiego.com) — Carlsbad is under a heat advisory through Saturday evening, with temperatures expected to climb into the upper 80s to mid-90s along the coast. With strong Santa Ana winds also affecting inland areas, residents are urged to take precautions against heat-related illness and be prepared for possible weather-related disruptions nearby.

4. High school roundup: RB's big win highlights Friday's high school action (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Carlsbad High stayed unbeaten at 8-0 as running back Darian Webb exploded for 271 rushing yards and four touchdowns in a 42-26 Avocado West League win over San Marcos. The broader roundup recaps a busy Friday of high school football across San Diego County, but Carlsbad's dominant performance stands out in the league title race.
