AT&T Upgrades Carlsbad oDAS

AT&T has just upgraded its Carlsbad oDAS (outdoor distributive antenna system) site with its premier 4G LTE technology. AT&T customers in Carlsbad will now be able to experience AT&T’s fast data speeds.

The DAS locations are optimally positioned within the community, near Carlsbad Village Dr. and El Camino Real in west Carlsbad, just east of Interstate 5. AT&T continues to deliver an array of local wireless and wireline network upgrades in the San Diego region. With these network enhancements in this area, customers will benefit from blazing speeds, great reliability, broad coverage, and excellent overall performance from AT&T. Across San Diego and California, AT&T’s 2013 investments have resulted in expansion and enhancement of AT&T’s 4G LTE network, which provides ultra-fast speeds.

Over the past five years, wireless data traffic has increased more than 20,000 percent on AT&T’s wireless network alone. People are no longer only accessing the Internet at home or in the office, they are doing it wherever they are from their mobile device. AT&T network engineers are helping enable this shift in Internet usage habits by putting in place new technologies, such as Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS). A DAS network consists of many antennas tuned to precisely match the areas of a building or venue where boosted service is needed. AT&T DAS helps address the exponential network traffic growth at large venues and other hard to serve areas, such as sporting and entertainment venues, hospitals, college campuses, airports, hotels, conference centers and more.

DAS helps boost mobile broadband coverage, improve reliability in heavily trafficked areas and enhance network capacity, alleviating pressure on wireless networks when thousands of people in close proximity are actively using their mobile devices simultaneously. DAS is seamless and invisible for customers, but the results are easy to see.

As part of its nearly $1.15 billion investment in its California wireless and wired networks so far this year, AT&T has completed several key network projects in the San Diego region, including Carlsbad. These projects, which are part of the company’s Velocity IP Plan (VIP), a three-year investment plan announced last fall to expand and enhance its IP broadband networks, build on the nearly $750 million AT&T has invested in its wireless and wired networks in San Diego from 2010 through 2012.

AT&T’s investments are making a difference. Recently, Seattle-based RootMetrics released a wireless network performance study for San Diego, which named AT&T in a tie as the overall RootMetrics RootScore Award winner for its combination of call, text and mobile Internet performance. AT&T is faring very well in RootMetrics testing for overall (voice/data/text) performance.
