Boys Hoops: LCC Season Ends with Regional Loss

The Mavericks hit a dry spell in the second quarter and fall 65-43 to Taft of Woodland Hills in the SoCal quarterfinals.

A 15-0 run over the final minutes of the first quarter and well into the second carried Taft High of Woodland Hills over visiting La Costa Canyon 65-43 in the Southern California Regionals boys Division I quarterfinals. The sixth-seeded Mavericks end their season at 28-5.

Taft, seeded third in the division, improves to 29-2 with its 19th straight win. The Toreadors will meet second-seeded Corona Centennial in Saturday's regional semifinals.

With LCC leading 15-11, Taft scored the final five points in the first quarter for a 16-15 lead, then opended the second period with 10 consecutive points to pull out to a comfortable 16-15 advantage.

"We knew they were a team of runs and right there, they had one big one,'' LCC Mavs coach Dave Cassaw told the North County Times. "Our goal was to limit the damage from those runs, but we didn't do a very good job of that.''

The Mavericks' high-scoring trio of Drew Kitchens (9), Matt Shrigley (9) and  David Travers (2), each of whom scored at least 20 points in LCC's previous game, were held to a combined 20 points. Zach Beery was the Mavs' high scorer with 12.'

La Costa Canyon shot just 27 percent from the field and was outrebounded 31-20. Taft outscored the Mavs 36-14 over the middle two quarters.
