Buena Vista Elementary to Celebrate Distinguished School Award & 50th Anniversary

A celebratory event co-hosted by the California Department of Education and San Diego County Office of Education will be held on the afternoon of May 23, 2012. That evening, from 5-8 pm, the Buena Vista community will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

, a Title I school, has been named a . It is one of only 387 elementary schools across the state to be honored this year.

A celebratory event co-hosted by the California Department of Education and San Diego County Office of Education will be held on the afternoon of May 23, 2012. That evening, from 5-8 pm, the Buena Vista community will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The plaque will be displayed and all are welcome to attend.

In his congratulatory letter to Buena Vista Principal Tina Howard, Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, stated, “This award is a direct reflection of the dedication, hard work and vision of your school’s educational community.”

Saying she was delighted to receive news of the award, Principal Howard reports, “The Buena Vista community is extremely proud of this recognition because it recognizes the impact that our teachers’ commitment to professional development in the areas of standards-based, differentiated instruction and student engagement strategies has had on student achievement and school culture.” She notes that over the past four years, Buena Vista’s Academic Performance Index (API) scores have soared nearly 100 points; from 797 to 887.

With this latest award to Buena Vista, currently 12 sites have been named a California Distinguished School at least once.

District Superintendent John A. Roach, Ed.D. states, “Principal Howard and her staff are to be commended for this accomplishment. As a close-knit school community, Buena Vista works hard to involve parents and local businesses in efforts that offer each student an opportunity to achieve. I am pleased to see the combined efforts result in this high accolade.”
