Carlsbad HS Artists Win Vans Contest
Students at Carlsbad High School take it all in the Vans Shoes Competition, bringing home $75,000 in prize awards for their Art program.
Carlsbad High School students came home from New York City with $75,000 in prize money for the CHS Art program, winning the Grand Prize--$50,000--in the Vans Custom Culture Shoes Contest, as well as the Local Attitude Award--$15,000--sponsored by Journeys, and the Skate Deck Design--$10,000-- for the TRUTH campaign, an anti-smoking initiative.
Carlsbad High School students’ designs had been awarded first place in California, for the second year in a row, so Vans flew 20 students and 5 adults to New York City for the finals awards event.
Vans had mailed four pairs of shoes to each of 2000 schools, and gave art students four themes--Art, Music, Action Sports, and Local Flavor--to guide their designs. Over 91,000 students participated in the contest. The CHS students designed some remarkable shoes, and their creations had made it into the semi-finals, and then the finals in NYC.

“We are impressed by the talent of these remarkable young artists,” stated Carlsbad Unified Superintendent Dr. Suzette Lovely. “They couldn’t have gone all the way without the votes of a supportive community and the leadership of CHS Art teacher Kelly Foulk. Congratulations!”
