Q&A with Carlsbad's Pet Sitting & Dog Walking Business Extraordinaire

April Alvillar started Dogs on the Run in 2003 in Carlsbad. The pet sitting and dog walking business serves thousands of clients in Carlsbad and thousands more across the U.S.

Why did you get into pet sitting and dog walking?

I am an SDSU graduate, and decided not to follow that career path. While going to school I worked at a travel agency (in accounting)  for seven years and had built up a small business caring for client's pets, without realizing it. A friend of mine made the suggestion to start the business and I went for it.

Having wagging tails and licks greet me each day. There is rarely a bad day. I think the rewarding part of the job is knowing that we are helping our clients and doing a great job. I love that they rely on us and we can let them work or go on vacation knowing that their home and pets are well cared for.

When we lose pets. Ohhh- break my heart! You become so attached to each one in such an special way. I cant express how much it hurts.

How did Dogs on the Run expand to other states?

DOTR grew bigger and bigger and naturally some employees moved away from San Diego. But when they moved to places like Florida, Phoenix, Seattle, Nashville, Ohio, etc, they loved DOTR so much, so they just remained Independent Contractors and opened up a branch in their new area. Please note we are not a franchise. I had no idea that we would grow the way we have. It has been such a blessing.

What advice do you have for others who are interested in working with animals in this sort of business?

My advice is network with your competition. We help and protect each other. Many people think that it is an easy job. But, honestly, it is hard work. To be successful you have to be available. Which means you can find yourself working 7 days a week 24 hours a day. Holidays aren't typically spent with friends and family. Its our busiest time of the year.

How many pets do you have at home? I have Max the boxer and Lily the kitty. The pics are with my babies.

Does DOTR get involved in the community?

We have done lots of work in the community. Our current project is working with Brother Bennos in Oceanside. We are collecting food, collars, bowls, and other pet supplies  for the working poor and homeless. Dogs On The Run feels that there is something to be said about the people who keep their pets even during a hard time. We want to be there for them.

We also work with Escondido Humane Society to help educate kids ages 6 to 12 on pets during summer camps.
