Carlsbad USD Students take New CA Tests
New California State Assessments Roll Out in Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD)
CUSD Students Begin Taking New State Assessments
The new California academic assessments are rolling out in Carlsbad Unified School District from late April through the end of May. Students in grades three to eight and eleven will be taking these new computer-based tests. These assessments are aligned with California’s new state standards, which were designed to encourage critical thinking, analytical writing, and real-world problem solving--the skills students will need to be successful in school and in life.
Students will answer fewer multiple-choice questions and more short answers and extended responses that will require them to demonstrate a deeper understanding of key concepts. The tests will provide students with on-line tools, support, and accommodations available to give a fair and accurate estimate of each students achievement. They will provide information more quickly, allowing educators additional time to plan professional development and fine-tune curriculum and instruction.

The new assessments are part of a larger plan to maintain excellent teaching and learning in every school. The plan also includes higher academic standards, more decision-making in the hands of schools and communities, and more resources dedicated to schools and to students with the greatest needs.
“The new California academic standards raise the bar,” states CUSD Superintendent Dr. Suzette Lovely. “As educators, it’s important for us to monitor how well our students are performing and make adjustments in our instructional programs to ensure they succeed.”
