Carlsbad Wins with Late Drive, 2-Point Conversion
A flea-flicker pass as time runs out is the key to the Lancers' 36-35 win over San Diego High.
It took somewhat of a miracle, but new Carlsbad High football coach Thadd MacNeal has his first win.
The Lancers built leads of 21-0 and 28-14 in the first half but needed a last-minute, 76-yard drive capped by a flea-flicker touchdown as time expired and a two-point conversion to edge San Diego High 36-35 Friday night in Balboa Stadium.
Aaryn Dorsett took a handoff on a play that began at the Cavers 39, and he tossed the ball back to quarterback Tanner Wrisley, who fired downfield. Saul Paleo, who had caught a crucial 33-yard pass on fourth down earlier in the drive, made a one-handed grab just beyond the defense to get Carlsbad within a point.

MacNeal decided to go for two points and the win, and Dorsett ran it in as Carlsbad evened its record at 1-1.
That's a play (the flea flicker) that's been in my bag of tricks for 15 years, and I usually try to bring it out once a season," said MacNeal. "I don't think that game should have been as close, but you always give credit to your opponents."
