Green says the newest award-winning piece grew out of last year’s “One in Seven” feature on hunger in San Diego. He relates, “Josh, now 21, spent much of his youth homeless; sleeping under bridge overpasses and on street corners. He has become an accomplished motivational speaker who moves people by sharing his experiences. Josh spoke to Carlsbad High students after a ‘One in Seven’ screening. The CHSTV team was captivated by his powerful story and determined to tell it in a personalized, highly compassionate way.”
While pursuing the story, reporter Krysta Mortland and photojournalist Jordan Bruhn returned to the streets of San Diego with Josh. There, they ran into Josh's long-lost father, who remains homeless. As shown in the film, Josh's dad brings Josh into the underpass where he spent many nights as a child.
