CUSD Superintendent Visits LDS Seminary

Dr. Ben Churchill attends two days of early-morning LDS seminary classes for Sage Creek and Carlsbad High School.

Carlsbad, CA -- Carlsbad Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Ben Churchill visited two days of early morning seminary classes this week to gain an understanding of how some students begin their daily studies. High school-aged members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) attend a daily seminary course to study scripture before school starts. The 2016-2017 Seminary curriculum focuses on The New Testament.

Dr. Churchill visited the the Sage Creek High School seminary class on Wednesday, held in the home of Laurie Haslam. The class of 15 students ranged from 9-12 graders. Dr. Churchill remarked, "I thoroughly enjoyed meeting students outside of the ordinary school environment. I'm impressed with their commitment to attend Seminary every morning, and I imagine it makes a big difference to start their day with reflection."

On Thursday Dr. Churchill, Carlsbad High School Principal Dr. Josh Porter, CUSD Board Member Elisa Williamson, and Mark Tanner visited other seminary classes. Seminary students attending Carlsbad High School convene at the LDS church building across the street from the school. Dr. Porter said, "It was a privilege to observe our dedicated youth engaged in their commitment to become a positive influence in our world. Since day one, I have been impressed with the Carlsbad Community. What I observed today validated that impression."

LDS high school students across the nation attend seminary either in the early morning, or in some locations as a course integrated into their daily school schedule. Sage Creek students attend seminary from 6:10-7:00 am and Carlsbad students meet from 6:25-7:15 am. To earn their seminary graduation diploma, students must complete four years of seminary and fulfill requisites in attendance, reading, learning assessment, and endorsement. The purpose of LDS Seminaries and Institutes is "to help youth and young adults understand and rely on the teachings and Atonement of Jesus Christ, qualify for the blessings of the temple, and prepare themselves, their families, and others for eternal life with their Father in Heaven."

Dr. Churchill summarized, "These students exemplify what is best about our school district: commitment, persistence, and an opportunity to make a difference if you are willing to put in the work."
