April 27, 2020

As we shared last week, our Board of Trustees has adopted a temporary grading policy during school facility closures due to COVID-19. Here is a one-page overview of the policy.

The policy includes the following:

  • For grades TK through 5: elementary school end-of-year report cards will only reflect comments and feedback from teachers. No grades will be reported.
  • For grades 6 through 8: middle school end-of-year report cards will reflect “credit” or “no credit.” No letter grades will be reported for semester 2.
  • For grades 9 through 12: students will be able to choose one of the following for the current term:
    • receive “credit” or “no credit” for all courses (with no impact to GPA) - this will be the default selection for high school students; OR
    • receive a traditional letter grade for all courses (with GPA weight) - students will need to submit a request for this option.

Families with high school students should be on the lookout for an email from their school with specific information about the process for students to choose traditional grading for their classes.

Students will need to follow the directions and timelines shared by their high school in order to select traditional grading.

Because each of our high schools operate on distinct grading calendars, each school will have slightly different timelines for grading. Sage Creek runs on a trimester system; Carlsbad High and Carlsbad Seaside Academy run on a semester system; and Carlsbad Village Academy runs on a quarter system. Please be aware of the deadlines established by each high school.
