Driver Arrested After Firearm Discharges During Carlsbad Crash

The suspect remains under police supervision while receiving medical care, police said.

CARLSBAD, CA — A driver's firearm discharged during a traffic collision Tuesday night in Carlsbad, but no one was injured by gunfire, authorities said.

Officers responded at 11:08 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a crash in the 4400 block of Carlsbad Boulevard, according to the Carlsbad Police Department. Officers learned one driver had a firearm, which discharged as the person handled it. No gunshot injuries were reported.

Both drivers were taken to a hospital for treatment of crash-related injuries. One driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence causing injury, being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, and carrying a loaded firearm in public, police said. The suspect remains under police supervision while receiving medical care.
