CARLSBAD, CA – The Carlsbad Police Department is conducting a DUI sobriety and safety checkpoint this weekend.
The checkpoint is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Saturday and end at 12:30 a.m. Sunday on Palomar Airport Road at Gateway Drive.
Law enforcement officers use sobriety checkpoints to evaluate drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment at specific points on the roadway, Carlsbad officer Shaun Lawton said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, such checkpoints increase the public's awareness of the hazards of drinking and driving, as well as serve as a deterrent to drunk driving.
“The reduction of impaired driving is everyone’s concern,” Lawton said. “Working together we can save lives.”
