DUI Checkpoint Planned In Carlsbad For Labor Day Weekend

The annual Nava Linen DUI Checkpoint is named after two CHP officers who were killed on duty as a result of someone drinking and driving.

CARLSBAD, CA — The California Highway Patrol will conduct a DUI checkpoint Saturday within the city of Carlsbad.

The annual Nava Linen DUI Checkpoint is named after two CHP Oceanside-area officers, Sean Nava and Stephen Linen, who were killed on duty as a result of someone drinking and driving, according to CHP spokesman Mark Latulippe.

In October 2000, an impaired driver hit and killed Nava as he investigated a traffic collision on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad, according to the CHP. In August 2001, an impaired driver struck and killed Linen as he conducted a traffic enforcement stop on I-5 in Encinitas.

"Both officers paid the ultimate sacrifice serving the North County community at the hands of DUI drivers," Latulippe said.

"Driving under the influence is a choice – a choice that can have catastrophic consequences. Today there are more options than ever to get home safely; DUI is unacceptable."
