Palomar Orchid Society welcomes its own President, Dr. Gilbert J. Ho, M.D., to speak at the November 7 meeting. His talk will be on Stanhopea orchids with emphasis on the species and growing Stanhopeas in general. Free to the public.
Dr. Ho, a practicing cognitive neurologist in Rancho Bernardo, neuroscience researcher and volunteer professor in neurology at UCSD, has been an avid orchid enthusiast and collector for about 12 years. Starting with one phalenopsis back when he first moved to San Diego for his neurology fellowship training, he has expanded his collection over the years to include hundreds of plants consisting of paphiopedilums, cattleyas, cymbidiums, oncidiums, species and others. In the last 4 years, he has focused his collection primarily on paphiopedilum, stanhopea and neofinetia, maintaining them in a home greenhouse and shade structures. About a decoade ago, he joined the Palomar Orchid Society (POS) and the American Orchid Society (AOS), and has been active as an officer in the POS for many years, holding the position of president for the last 4 years. As his latest project, he is now fanatical about collecting as many stanhopea species and hybrids as can be found, and has some interest in trying to hybridize them as well.
