How do you find a great REALTOR®?

Just like when you select a mortgage lender, you can ask your friends and family, co-workers and neighbors who they recommend. Look around your neighborhood, and see which real estate agent has the most houses for sale and observe which REALTORS® are holding open houses.

Research the top 5 agents by reviewing their online resumes at LinkedIn. It is a great place to start, and you should read their blogs to find out how much they know. For example, ActiveRain is an online source for top real estate agents who write blogs and articles.

It is important to select a Realtor® who operates with the same communication style as you do. Are you a young person who prefers to text message or Skype your friends rather than call them on the phone? Would you prefer to meet up on Facebook instead of in person? Are you from the boomer generation and e-mail is best for you? Do you prefer written letters and cards, along with a personal handshake when you meet someone in person? You will find this step critical as you go through the process because you need to communicate with your agent frequently.

Along with the communication style, you need to know how responsive your agent will be in communicating with you. Will he contact you on a regular basis throughout the transaction? Does she return your phone calls and answer your emails promptly? Are they available when you need him or her? Of course, you cannot expect your agent to be available 24/7, but he should be available to assist you during regular business hours.
