Labrador Retrievers Rescued From Underground Pipe In San Diego County

SAN DIGEO COUNTY, CA – Two Labrador retrievers were rescued from an underground pipe in North San Diego County after being trapped for days.

Now under the care of County Animal Services, the dogs were discovered when a man tending an avocado and orange grove in Fallbrook heard whimpering, according to County News Center. After digging and cutting part of the pipe, the man called County Animal Services for help.

An animal control officer helped dig and cut away more of the pipe before a male and female dog were both pulled to safety.

Neither dog appeared to be injured, but both were dehydrated and very thin, according to officials. The male dog was so weak, he could not stand. They were taken to a veterinary urgent care.

"We estimate the dogs were in the drain for at least three days," said County Animal Services Director Laurie Joniaux. "It’s amazing they’re actually doing so well."

The dogs apparently fell into a hole at the top of a hill that leads to an underground pipe, according to County News Center. They are now recovering at the county's shelter in Carlsbad.

The male is about 5 years old, and the female is about 2 years old. Neither had identification.

The dogs will be held through the close of business on Wednesday in case an owner comes forward. If no one comes forward, the dogs will become available for adoption on Thursday.
