LCC Boys' Fast Start Gives Them Title Over Torrey
Drew Kitchens leads the way with 25 points as the Mavericks move on the the SoCal Regionals.
Five years after claiming their first San Diego Section boys basketball title, La Costa Canyon High has a second, on the same night that the girls team won it all.
With Drew Kitchens leading the way with 25 points, the Mavericks built an early lead over Torrey Pines and never looked back, taking a 68-48 decision over the same team they edged 51-50 in early January.
Matt Shrigley added 15 points and David Travers 10 for top-seeded LCC (27-4), which has won seven in a row and 12 of 13. The Mavs now enter the Southern California Regionals and will host a game Tuesday or Wednesday. Torrey Pines (25-6) moves on as well, though the Falcons will be on the road. Pairings will be announced late Sunday.

"We played with great poise, the way we've played all season," said La Costa Canyon coach Dave Cassaw. "That's all you ask as a coach, play like you have all season."
Leading 9-6 midway through the first quarter, the Mavs went on an 11-2 run for a 20-8 lead. A 3-pointer by the Falcons' Garret Galvin just before the quarter ended carried over momentum into the second quarter, and after a 9-0 run Torrey was within 20-17. But two stright 3-pointers by Kitchens extended the lead back to nine, and the Falcons never got closer than five after that, trailing 34-25 at the half.
