Library Hosts Local Authors' Festival

Six authors are highlighted at this year's event featuring a unique cookbook, fast-paced thriller and historical biography.

Meet local writers and discover new books at Carlsbad City Library’s fourth annual Local Authors’ Festival on Saturday, Feb. 4. Carlsbad and North County authors will participate in a panel discussion at the library’s Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by a book sale and signing event in the library’s courtyard from 12 to 1 p.m. The panel will be moderated by Carlsbad mystery author Taffy Cannon.

The 2012 participating authors include:

Lorin Beller Blake (Splash! How Women Entrepreneurs Dive into Success)
Karin Eastham (Cook the Part: Delicious, Interactive and Fun Team Cooking)
Carol Ann Lindsay (One Allied Sailor)
Sally Eaton-Magaña and Quetzalcoatl Magaña (Lost Hope)
Nancy Stanley (Pillow with a Heartbeat)

Carlsbad resident Stanley says, "I'm looking forward to being a part of the Local Authors’ Festival. It will give me a chance to not only sell my book, Pillow with a Heartbeat, but more importantly I'll have the opportunity to talk about the importance of pet therapy. You will meet my dog Truffles who works every day bringing smiles to the elderly and to all those who need special attention."

GIA Research Scientist Eaton-Magaña adds, "Events like this are so important for local authors. My co-author, Quetzalcoatl Magaña, and I will speak about our book, Lost Hope, an action-adventure novel about a stolen diamond. I was part of a scientific team that studied the Hope Diamond at the Smithsonian and this book grew out of those experiences. Thank you to the Carlsbad City Library; it's such a wonderful place to celebrate books."

Carlsbad's Lindsay echoes her fellow authors' sentiments and shares a little about her work, "In One Allied Sailor, we see what a Dutch Merchant Marine, Dirk Baatenburg de Jong accomplished, suffered, and saw during World War II in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific. In addition to being a World War II narrative, there's also a love story between Dirk and a young Hungarian-American widow. It's my father's story and should interest both young and old alike."
