Man Convicted Of Murder For Fatal Freeway Crash In Carlsbad

VISTA, CA — A man charged with driving drunk and killing another motorist in a crash on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad was awaiting the next phase of his trial Monday after being convicted of murder and other charges.
Andrew David Shaw, 46, was found guilty by a Vista jury last week for causing the Oct. 22, 2023, crash that killed Aurora Rodriguez Urrea.
The California Highway Patrol said Shaw was driving a pickup truck that rear-ended the victim's vehicle just before 10 p.m. on the southbound side of the freeway near Cannon Road.

Urrea and a passenger of hers were hospitalized, and Urrea died at a trauma center. Shaw also sustained minor injuries in the crash and was arrested after receiving treatment at a hospital.
A criminal complaint filed against Shaw indicates he has a previous San Diego County DUI conviction from 2021.

Along with murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and DUI counts related to the crash, jurors also convicted Shaw of three counts of resisting arrest.
A sentencing date has not yet been set in Shaw's case, as jurors must first reconvene later this week for another phase of the trial dealing with "aggravating factors" such as prior convictions or other circumstances of the crime.
