Meet Elizabeth: An Inspirational Carlsbad Resident

Special Olympics Southern California has many stories to tell of courage, hope, and inspiration. Here's is Carlsbad resident Elizabeth Weaverling's story.

Elizabeth Weaverling has been participating in Special Olympics for almost eight years. She started competing at age 14 in gymnastics and has since also played tennis, bocce, soccer and golf.

Currently her sports focus is all about golf, which she does with her dad, a golf coach. Shortly after Elizabeth started Special Olympics she was selected to take a public speaking course in Arizona in order to act as Special Messenger for Special Olympics. In that role, Elizabeth has had the honor and opportunity to speak as an athlete and fundraiser in front of groups such as Walmart executives and law enforcement organizations. She's also participated in The Polar Plunge and other events.

Elizabeth helped with the idea of having athletes donate medals to be used in fundraising events as well. This past summer, Elizabeth was thrilled to be profiled by Special Olympics Southern California on the group's video, which was a lead-up to the Summer Games and televised in Los Angeles and San Diego.
