Pedestrian Killed Crossing Hwy 78

The man was struck by two vehicles and later was pronounced dead at an Escondido hospital, the CHP said.

VISTA, CA – A pedestrian was struck and killed by two vehicles while attempting to cross state Route 78 in Vista, authorities said Wednesday.

Dispatchers received several 911 calls around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday from people reporting that a pedestrian was attempting to cross westbound state Route 78 near Melrose Drive, California Highway Patrol public-affairs Officer Mark Latulippe said.

The man, believed to be 30 years old, entered the highway lanes and was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado, then a Mazda 3 hatchback, Latulippe said.

The unidentified man was taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was later pronounced dead, the officer said.

The Chevrolet and Mazda drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, Latulippe said, adding that intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has information about the identity of the victim, who is believed to have been a transient, was asked to call the CHP at 858-637-3800.
