Suspected DUI Driver Arrested After Pursuit Ends In Crash In Carlsbad

CARLSBAD, CA — A woman suspected of driving under the influence was arrested over the weekend after leading authorities on a pursuit from Encinitas to Carlsbad and crashing into two vehicles, authorities said.

A deputy saw a black Toyota Corolla unable to maintain lanes around 9:15 p.m. Sunday in Encinitas, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

"The deputy believed the driver was possibly under the influence of alcohol or drugs," sheriff's Sgt. Christi Ramirez said. "The deputy initiated a traffic enforcement stop but the driver failed to yield, and a traffic pursuit ensued."

The deputy followed the the car onto northbound Interstate 5 and surface streets.

"The Corolla ran several red lights and drove on the wrong side of the road," Ramirez said.

The deputy stopped pursuing the car but followed its path from eastbound on La Costa Avenue from Piraeus Street. The car crashed into two other vehicles at the intersection of La Costa Avenue and El Camino Real in Carlsbad, Ramirez said.

The 41-year-old driver of the first vehicle went off the road and was injured in the crash, Ramirez said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The 18-year-old driver and 18-year-old passenger of the second vehicle were not injured.

The driver and sole occupant of the Corolla, Lindsey Roberts, 40, was arrested on suspicion of an outstanding felony arrest warrant and felony evading.

She was trapped inside her car and firefighters had to extricate her from the vehicle, Ramirez said. She was taken to a hospital for treatment of possible broken bones.

Sheriff's deputies are conducting the criminal investigation, while the Carlsbad Police Department is investigating the traffic collision.
