Tennis Action Continues at La Costa Tournament

Top seeds advance at Mercury Insurance Open; Vandeweghe to play twice on Wednesday.

Tennis fans will get a double dose of local standout Coco Vandeweghe on Wednesday at the Mercury Insurance Open at La Costa Resort.

After sixth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia withdrew when an abdominal injury she suffered at the tournament at Stanford last week failed to heal, she was replaced by lucky loser Olga Savchuk of Ukraine, who will face Vandeweghe on the Stadium Court Wednesday afternoon.

Vandeweghe also will team with doubles partner Alexa Glatch in an evening match against fellow Americans Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears.

In action Tuesday night, top-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia advanced to the third round with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over American qualifier Jill Craybas. Coming into the match, Zvonareva held a 4-1 advantage in career head-to-head meetings, but the two had not met since 2008 in Los Angeles.

Long rallies highlighted the opening set, in which there were no service breaks until the ninth game, when at 4-4, Craybas hit two double faults and lost serve to give the Russian a 5-4 lead.

Serving for the set, Zvonareva hit two double faults, but still managed to hold serve and win the set.

In the second set, neither player could convert on break point opportunities until late. With the scored tied at 5-5, Zvonareva scored the critical service break to take a 6-5 lead.

As the Russian served for the match, she lost the first point of the 12th game, but won four points in a row to close out the match in one hour and 47 minutes.

“It's never easy to play the first match, but I'm happy to win this match,” said Zvonareva.

No. 2 seed Andrea Petkovic of Germany also won, topping American Alexa Glatch 6-3, 6-4.
