Wildlife At Agua Hedionda Lagoon: Photo Of The Day

CARLSBAD, CA — Patch reader and local photographer Susan Newlin of Susan Newlin Nature Photography captured this photo of a brown pelican at Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad.

"He has just scooped up a gullet full of fish and is in the process of swallowing," Newlin explained. "He can do that within a period of a minute. I was excited to capture this with a tiny fish in the bottom of his gullet, as well as having all the detailed vascular track of the gullet highlighted by the sun setting behind him."
