2012 "School Matters" Essay Contest

Spotlight on the elementary school winner

1st Place essay written by Lucy Guo of Independent Elementary, 5th Grade

Category 3: Why is it important for households without children in our district schools to support our schools through this period of cuts?

Do you remember when you were a kid?  Do you remember all the opportunities you had to participate in all those programs for free?  Well, I don’t know if you heard, but budget cuts are cutting those off!  We don’t have the things we used to have.  We already lost track, volleyball, 4th grade music and choir, and some more!  And the ones we have left, well, sometimes they don’t have the right equipment, they can only take a certain amount of people, and some you even have to pay for!  These are the things you used to have, and for free!

I think households without children should help support schools because children are the future.  How we are educated determines the opportunities we get.  The more opportunities we get, the better we are, and the better citizens in the community, the better the community is.  I know that you want children to be well educated and our community to do well in the economy. Well, that brings us to our next subject.

Our community needs well educated people to make decisions for it, right?  Well, if children are the future, then we need well-rounded people to be in charge of our community.  What does that mean?  It means that the money you donate goes right back to you.  It builds the community you live in.

Don’t you think it’s the right thing to do?  It’s like, THE GOLDEN RULE.  When you see someone in need, you help them.  So please, help us.  You have no idea what big role you are playing.  You are deciding a child’s future.  You are deciding a community’s future.  You are deciding the future of America.
