Castro Valley resident Andrea Daniel is playing the leading role of Grizabella in CATS at Woodminster Summer Musicals, September 7-16. The show will be performed outdoors, in historic Woodminster Amphitheater in Oakland's Joaquin Miller Park, 3300 Joaquin Miller Road, Oakland. (www.woodminster.com, 510-531-9597)
Based on T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, CATS is as much a cultural phenomenon as a musical, and set long-run records both in London (21 years) and on Broadway (18 years). It has been translated into more than 20 languages, and continues to be performed all around the world. With a cast of all-singing, all-dancing cats, this show expanded the idea of what a leading character in a musical might be. The songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber, most notably "Memory," have transcended musical theater and become popular standards.
Come early and enjoy a picnic, a walk in Joaquin Miller Park, and the beautiful bay views with your family. As the sun sets, take your seats in the outdoor theater and enjoy an evening of music and magic under the stars.
Tickets are $27-$56, with $2 discounts for seniors and children. Groups of 25 or more can purchase blocks of tickets for half price. Our “Kids Come Free” program offers free tickets to kids who attend with paying adults.
Performances: Sept 7 (8pm), Sept 8 (8pm), Sept 9 (7pm), Sept 13 (7pm), Sept 14 (8pm), Sept 15 (8pm), Sept 16 (7pm). www.woodminster.com
