Back to School: CHP Urges Caution Around Buses, School Zones

Do not pass a school bus with its flashing red lights and stop sign extended in either direction on an undivided highway. Passing a school bus with its flashing red lights and stop sign extended is illegal per California Vehicle Section 22454 and it puts our children at risk .Be prepared to stop if you are behind, or approaching from the opposite direction, a school bus that has its flashing yellow lights activated. School buses use their yellow flashing lights to warn motorists of an upcoming stop.Be aware that children often walk into traffic from between parked vehicles near school zones. Be sure to also use extreme caution wherever you see a stopped school bus, as children are often in the area.Use your headlights during dusk and dawn hours to help you identify pedestrians and other motorists more easily. In addition, utilizing headlights make you more visible to other motorists and pedestrians.Obey school safety patrols and crossing guards. Stay alert while traveling through a school zone and keep our children safe!
