Catalytic Converter Thieves Shoot Vehicle Owner: Police

The victim was shot twice in the leg, according to Alameda County Sheriff's officials.

CASTRO VALLEY, CA — Thieves trying to steal a catalytic converter shot the owner of the vehicle when he confronted them early Wednesday morning in Castro Valley, sheriff's officials said.

Deputies responded at 3:50 a.m. following a report of shots fired in the 4500 block of Sargent Avenue in Castro Valley.

Deputies found the victim with two gunshots to his leg, according to the Sheriff's Office. The victim was taken to a hospital and is expected to live.

Four suspects left in a four-door sedan following the shooting, sheriff's officials said.

Deputies saw a vehicle matching the description of the suspects' on Interstate Highway 580 near 150th Avenue and followed it onto state Highway 24. California Highway Patrol officers joined the chase.

Authorities tried to stop the sedan, but the driver kept going, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Authorities ended their pursuit at the junction with Interstate Highway 680 because they could not tell which way the vehicle went, sheriff's officials said.

Later the CHP told the Sheriff's Office that four suspects in a vehicle crashed in Walnut Creek and fled. They remain at large. Inside the trunk of the vehicle authorities found numerous severed catalytic converters, sheriff's officials said.

Authorities towed the vehicle as evidence.
