Chabot Sports Report: Baseball, Basketball Get It Done
Gladiators upend Lassen on the diamond; men's, women's teams rebound on the court.

GLADIATORS DIAL UP A DIAMOND DANDY
Chabot College baseball coach Will Tavis called it a “good team win.”
Indeed, the Gladiators pitched and hit well and played solid defense in a 6-1 triumph over Lassen on Saturday, Feb. 19 in nonconference play.
Starting pitcher Gabe Tanner went seven strong innings to pick up the victory, allowing six hits and one run in the top of the first inning. Reliever Ryan Muir closed it out, allowing no hits and striking out four over 1.2 innings. The Gladiators (5-5) were led on offense by John Gazdar, who doubled twice in four at-bats; Justin Durflinger (2 for 4, triple, home run); and Sam Gilliam (2 for 3, home run).
In other action last week, Chabot beat Los Medanos 8-2 and fell to Diablo Valley 10-3.
Against Los Medanos, first baseman Matt Sugden was 2 for 3 with two RBI. He slugged a double and a home run. Gazdar was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI.
Starting pitcher Bryce Clark went five innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs and striking out two. Reliever Josh Caravalho was stellar over four hitless innings with six strikeouts.
The Gladiators will have a busy week at their new Steve Friend Stadium, with home games against Diablo Valley on Tuesday, De Anza on Thursday, and Mission on Friday, all starting at 2 p.m.
SOFTBALL
The Gladiators (1-3) split a doubleheader at Yuba on Feb. 12, winning 9-7 and losing 11-6. In the 9-7 triumph, Chabot leadoff Aliya Lubrin did her job well, going 3 for 4 with four runs scored.
Chabot also faced Ohlone in a wild one that was halted due to darkness in the bottom of the eighth inning, according to the state website. The game will be completed at another date.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Gladiators bounced back from a loss to State No. 1 City College of San Francisco with a convincing triumph over visiting Foothill 85-64 on Feb. 18 in the Coast-North. The Gladiators (17-9, 8-5) and College of San Mateo entered the week tied for fourth place in the conference.
Jaiden Rivera scored a team-high 18 points against Foothill, and Isaiah Saams Hoy had a nice game with 15 points and eight assists. Isaiah Veal contributed 14 points and four rebounds, and versatile Diggy Winbush added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Malik Kaba also delivered 12 points and seven boards.
Chabot will conclude conference play at home against district-rival Las Positas, ranked No. 3 in the state, at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Gladiators (13-12, 6-3 Coast-North) reside in third place in the Coast-North after splitting games last week, falling to CCSF 56-53 and beating Foothill 71-35. Chabot was ranked 14th in the Feb. 14 CCCWBCA North Region Poll.
Chabot had a nice team effort against Foothill as Dede Franklin led the way with 16 points.
The Gladiators will wrap up conference play at CSM on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
