Chabot Sports Roundup: Gladiators Sharp on Diamond, Court
Baseball team ups its win streak to three; Basketball making push for playoffs

The Chabot baseball team racked up three consecutive wins over a five-day stretch, sweeping two from Laney and topping Solano in extra innings.
Three Chabot pitchers — Josh Carvahlo, Ryan Muir and Bryce Clarke — combined for 12 strikeouts and one walk in the team’s first win of the season, 5-2 over Laney on Feb. 1. Fred Ramos had two clutch RBI, and Shamil Youngblood scored twice.
The Gladiators (3-2) completed the sweep of Laney with a 5-0 shutout on Feb. 3. Andres DeLeon was the winning pitcher, going 5 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts. Zach Penrod came in for the save, striking out two. Shortstop Jonathan Gazdar paced the 14-hit offense with three singles and a double. Alonzo Guijarro was 3 for 5 with a double, and Matt Sugden, Brian Duroff and Logan Mullin were all 2 for 4.
The Gladiators had no errors on defense in a complete performance.
Next, Chabot extended its record to 3-2 with a gritty win over Solano, 7-6 in 10 innings on Feb. 5. Reliever Carson Glavich came in to get the win with three strikeouts, and Penrod got the save. Starter Gabe Tanner went a solid 4.2 innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. Ryan Muir fanned six and allowed one hit over 2.2 innings.
Leadoff Justin Durflinger paced a lively offense going 4 for 6 with three doubles. JT Noble, Nick Mladnich, Sam Gilliam and Sugden all had two hits.
Men’s basketball
David Ogunleye and Isaiah Veal both had 18 points as the Chabot men’s basketball team walloped Canada-Redwood City 93-53 on Feb. 4 in the Coast-North.
Veal added five assists and three steals, helping the Gladiators shoot a tidy 53.6 percent from the floor. Skylar Robinson also stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and a block. Christian Pitcher also came up big with 16 points (7 for 12 from the floor). Ogunleye was 9 for 12 from the floor with five rebounds. Jaiden Rivera came off the bench to score 10.
The Gladiators (14-7, 6-3) have big back-to-back games this week against district-rival Las Positas (19-2, 6-1), ranked No. 3 in the state, as the teams vie for playoff positioning and top spots in the conference.
State No. 1 CCSF (23-1, 10-0) leads the Coast-North.
Chabot travels to Las Positas in a makeup game on Monday, Feb. 7 (5 p.m. tipoff) and will host the Hawks on Wednesday, Feb. 9 (6 p.m. tipoff).
Women’s basketball
The Gladiators (11-11, 4-2) saw their three-game winning streak end with a 78-65 loss to host Skyline. Chabot will travel to Ohlone on Friday, Feb. 11 and will have a big game at conference-co-leader CCSF (15-5, 4-1) on Feb. 16.
Coach Mark Anger’s team has been playing well, a stretch highlighted by a rousing 77-74 win over visiting Skyline on Jan. 28 and a 72-53 rout of College of San Mateo on Feb. 2. Cassidy Duncan had a team-high 22 against CSM, and Mikee Lopez added 18 points.
Lopez also had 17 in the loss to Skyline, when the Gladiators could not overcome a 47-34 halftime deficit.
