CVSan Wins Three Awards for the Path to Zero Waste and Web-Based Video Advertisements
CVSan receives 3 awards from California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO).

Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan)’s Path to Zero Waste and Web-Based Video Advertisements have been selected by the California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO) to receive three 2015 Communication in Excellence Awards in the categories of Innovation, Community Engagement, and Dollar Stretcher. CAPIO’s awards recognize and honor outstanding professional work and accomplishment, and CVSan’s Path to Zero Waste and Web-Based Video Advertisements represents standards of excellence and creativity.
Path to Zero Waste
In order to facilitate an interactive community engagement process to obtain input into the development of a living Zero Waste Strategic Plan, 16 meetings with public agencies, stakeholder groups, solid waste service providers, three public workshops, presentations to and discussion with the Board and Solid Waste Committee, and three tours were conducted in 2014. Participants in the community engagement process were instrumental in asking challenging questions, offering suggestions and solutions, and representing the Castro Valley community. CVSan adopted a goal of Zero Waste (90%+ diversion) by the year 2029. CVSan’s Zero Waste Strategic Plan may be viewed at www.cvsan.org/ZeroWaste.
Web-Based Video Advertisements
Using a creative and atypical method of promoting waste diversion and recycling, CVSan developed web-based video advertisements with the goal of broadening CVSan’s reach to different demographics and groups. The project consisted of 6 video “bumper” advertisements: 10-second spots that run before and after a news segment on www.CastroValleyTV.com. Last year, CVSan’s 6 ads from the project were placed 63 times and received a total of 30,593 views.
