HAYWARD, CA — A routine DUI traffic stop turned surreal for a Hayward California Highway Patrol officer when the driver stepped out of the car wearing bunny slippers, authorities said.

The officer was returning to the CHP Hayward area office when she saw a driver erratically crossing lanes and traveling up to 103 miles per hour, authorities said.

After pulling the driver over, the officer found evidence inside the car that she had possibly been using nitrous oxide, according to the Hayward California Highway Patrol.

That evidence included an icy cold canister and balloons, police said.

But the biggest surprise the officer got wasn't the drugs; according to CHP, it was the bunny slippers the driver was wearing.

"The slippers? Comfortable. The driving? Absolutely not," Hayward said in a statement online Thursday. "While the bunny slippers gave us a chuckle, impaired driving is no laughing matter."

The driver, a woman, was ultimately arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
