The San Lorenzo High football team turned in a gutsy performance, only to have a blocked extra point be the difference in a 17-16 loss to Castro Valley on Friday.

After the Trojans had gone up 17-10 midway through the third quarter on Mickey Cardoze's one-yard touchdown dive, the Rebels responded with a 16-play, 80-yard drive which culminated in a Christian Batiste eight-yard scoring run by Christian Batiste to pull San Lorenzo within 17-16.

The drive featured a 14-yard fourth-down run by Marcus Mosi, who after taking a low snap on a punt attempt, elected to run it and picking up the first down to keep the drive alive. Unfortunately for San Lorenzo, the potential game-tying extra point was blocked, leaving the Rebels behind by a point.

Despite Castro Valley's time-consuming, 13-play drive on its ensuing possession, the Rebels had a chance to win the game.

San Lorenzo stuffed Castro Valley stuffing quarterback Christian Chavez on a fourth-down attempt and got the ball back with just over six minutes remaining at its own 13-yard line.  A pass interference penalty on the Trojans and a 16-yard run by Batiste took the Rebels close to midfield, but a holding call on San Lorenzo was too much to overcome.

The Rebels would later get the ball back with just 12 seconds remaining, only to have quarterback Brandin Murphy's desperation pass intercepted.

"We couldn't crack their zone coverage tonight and the clock was against us," Wright said.

It appeared San Lorenzo would have its way early when Batiste went 80 yards for his first score of the night, giving the Rebels a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. However, Castro Valley responded with a 27-yard field goal by Nick Goulart and then after an interception by Moner Afschar, took a 10-7 lead on a 25-yard connection between Afschar and Chavez.

The Rebels tied the game at 10-10 with a field goal of its own by Ricardo Gonzalez from 30 yards out, the key plays on the drive being a connection between Murphy and Eric Johnson of 26 yards and another between Murphy and Mosi of 28 yards.

Batiste finished the night with 194 yards on 18 carries, while Johnson caught six passes for 71 yards.

The Rebels drop to 2-2-1 overall and 0-2 in Hayward Area Athletic League play.  San Lorenzo will host Tennyson at 1:30 p.m., on Saturday.
