Las Positas men's water polo earns historic win over Santa Rosa

The Hawks men's team emerged from a 7-0 deficit to rout Santa Rosa 16-7 in the West Valley water polo tournament

In a stunning turn of events, the Las Positas men’s water polo team rallied from a 7-0 deficit to trounce Santa Rosa 16-7 on Sept. 8 in the Nyquist Tournament at West Valley, marking the program’s first win over a Big 8 school.

“We’re off to our best start in program history,” coach Robby Arroyo said.

Freshman Marco Macchiavello led the Hawks with four goals and three assists, and goalie Bryan Meyn and team leader Jason Craighead also delivered key contributions. Sasha Lazzereschi scored five goals and Andrew Long Kettenhoffen scored four. Charles Lewandowski continues to shut down opponents’ key players.

Impressively, the Hawks did not allow a goal over the final three periods.

Las Positas hits the road this week for the San Joaquin Delta tournament, when they will play four matches in their final preparations for the Sept. 20 conference opener at home against Modesto.

The Las Positas women’s water polo team will open the season with four games in the West Valley Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
